Comprehensive abortion care includes providing information, managing abortions (both induced abortions and care for miscarriages/spontaneous abortions), and post-abortion care. Strengthening access to comprehensive abortion care within the healthcare system is crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) related to good health and well-being (SDG3) and gender equality (SDG5). The WHO Global Strategy for Reproductive Health, which aims to accelerate progress towards international development goals, considers addressing the issue of unsafe abortion2 as a priority action. The importance of quality abortion-related care for health is also emphasized in the United Nations Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s, and Adolescent Health, which includes evidence-based interventions in abortion and post-abortion care as effective means of helping individuals thrive and communities transform.
